Happy New Year!! It’s that time of year to make those half-hearted resolutions you know you won’t keep. The problem is you’re picking the same boring resolutions, i.e. exercise, diet, drink less, etc. Why not try something new this year and make a travel resolution? It may even lead to you completing some of those boring resolutions.
If you’re going to do this and make it stick, you need to do more than say you’re going to go on vacation this summer. Be an analytical traveler and make this an epic adventure with some pre-planning.
- Dust off that bucket list and see if anything is calling to you. Is this the year where you throw a dart at a map and go wherever it lands? (You get a redo if it lands in the ocean.) For inspiration, check out Mr and Mrs BucketList.

- Do you have work or school breaks to factor in? If you can only go at certain times, you can narrow your list further based on the weather.
After you’ve done the above, you should have a place or two in mind and an idea of when you will travel. Hopefully you have 10 places in mind and can hit all of them! You should also now be excited about your resolution and can start researching what to do, how to get there, where to stay, and have time on your side. If you’re a travel hacker, you can figure out how many points you need to fly free in business class and plan your card strategy accordingly. If you don’t have enough cash, return some of those clothes you got for Christmas and start making your own coffee.
I did say a travel resolution may lead to completing some of your boring resolutions as well, so here you go:
- Diet / exercise – Did you select a tropical locale? Better get that beach bod ready. Are you hiking the Inca Trail? Better get in shape or pay the price.
- Stress relief – When you’re having a bad day at the office, just look at the circle on your calendar with your departure date and stress will quickly vanish.
- Drink less – Are you going to an all you can eat / drink resort or cruise? If so, you need to get in drinking shape so this would have been a bad resolution. Same holds true if you plan to bond with locals with the universal friend-maker.
Now you will have a tangible reason to get in shape and every extra step you take will improve your travel experience. Don’t hesitate, take action today, write down your travel goal, and post in the comments below.
